If you’ve never been to our practice before, here are two easy routes you could take, starting from the Fair Oaks Library:
- Head north on Fair Oaks Blvd, then turn left onto Madison Ave. Turn left again onto Primrose Dr, then take the first left into the shopping center. We’re at 7840 Madison Ave #185.
- If the traffic on Madison is bad, you could reroute left onto Rimwood Dr, then turn right onto Wildridge Dr. Turn right again onto Primrose Dr and then left into the shopping center.
How Much Local History Do You Know?
Fair Oaks has a rich heritage that dates back to 1844 when the area was part of the Rancho San Juan Mexican land grant. The modern community took shape in 1895 when Brevet Brigadier General Charles Henry Howard and James W. Wilson acquired the land from California Senator Frederick K. Cox and businessman Crawford W. Clarke. Their Howard-Wilson Publishing Company surveyed the property and promoted Fair Oaks as one of their innovative “Sunset Colonies,” marketing it as a promising citrus colony following devastating freezes in Southern California and Florida.
By 1897, Fair Oaks was home to 300 permanent settlers, many of whom were professionals including bankers, engineers, and businessmen. The community’s growth accelerated in the early 1900s when local business leaders, including Valentine S. McClatchy (co-owner of the Sacramento Bee), formed the Fair Oaks Development Company. These civic boosters famously proclaimed Fair Oaks to be the “crown of the valley” in the “heart of California.”
The completion of the Fair Oaks Bridge across the American River in 1901, along with a new railroad line, transformed the community. Known today as “The Red Bridge,” this historic landmark remains a beloved local attraction where residents gather on the cliffs to watch stunning sunsets. By 1906, Fair Oaks had evolved into a thriving small town complete with a post office, hotel, bank, schools, churches, and shops along Main Street.
While a devastating freeze in 1932 ended Fair Oaks’s era as a major citrus producer, the community adapted and grew. The arrival of Aerojet in nearby Rancho Cordova in 1955, combined with improved access to Sacramento via Highway 50 and the Sunrise Boulevard Bridge, helped Fair Oaks transition into the vibrant residential community it is today. This blend of historic charm and modern convenience makes Fair Oaks a wonderful place to live and raise a family.
